An Historic Cottage
Built in 1779, the entire row of cottages was owned by the Edleston family – dyers at Dean Clough, who later expanded into stoving, finishing and woollen manufacture at Asquith Bottom Mill, Sowerby Bridge. The cottages would likely have housed farming or mill workers’ families, and had a communal toilet and coal stores at the lower end of the row. The land and five cottages were sold to members of the Crossley family, carpet manufacturers at Dean Clough, in 1946. The plots were then sold off individually by Nellie Crossley from 1958.
Originally two cottages, Shibden View Cottage underwent extensive renovation in 2020 and now provides modern, comfortable accommodation with all the character features of an 18th century home. Close to the centre of Halifax and overlooking Shibden Hall, home of the famous Anne Lister, Shibden View Cottage provides the perfect base for exploring West Yorkshire.
