Gentleman Jack

Key Locations

Anne Lister and her ancestral home, Shibden Hall, were catapulted into the limelight by the 2019 BBC Series ‘Gentleman Jack‘, written by Sally Wainwright.

Shibden View is perfectly situated for fans visiting the area – less than a mile from Shibden Hall, and overlooking the estate.
See below for unmissable places to visit.

Shibden Hall

What visit to Halifax would be complete without a visit to the Shibden estate! Dating back to 1420, the museum offers a fantastic insight into the lives of people who lived there – it’s also one of the major filming locations used in the Gentleman Jack series.

Bankfield Museum

Although not directly related to Anne Lister, Bankfield Museum is well worth a visit. Situated in the village of Akroydon, a Victorian model village, the museum tells the story of Halifax and its rich history.

Halifax Town Centre

From the Piece Hall, to Dean Clough Mills and the Town Hall, Halifax retains many of its 18th and 19th century buildings. The town was used as a filming location for the 1830’s street scenes seen in Gentleman Jack. Take a wonder through the streets, some of which have changed little over the last 200 years.

Halifax Minster

Anne was baptised here, the Lister family worshiped here, and many of the family are reportedly interred here – despite there being no sign of the family vault today.
Although the exact location of Anne Lister’s grave is unknown, the remains of her broken tombstone were discovered here in 2000 after going missing for 121 years. The remains are now on display, on a windowsill on the north side of the nave.

Wakefield Gate/Wainhouse Tower

Follow in the footsteps of Anne and Marian – in the scenes showing the sisters walking into Halifax on a cobbled road, they are in fact walking on Wakefield Gate. Just off Wakefield Gate is Wainhouse Tower, from which the opening shots of Halifax are filmed. The tower is open on bank holidays, when you can walk to the top and look out over the town.
